Patent Search in India

In India, presently we can able to get only the title, applicant, applicant address, abstract, inventor and patent classification in patent published in the Indian patent office. Now, there are some databases are available to search the patent for published and issued patents. However, the search facilities available in India do not have advanced search such as keyword search in description, in claims, foreign references etc. Here you can find the following patent search databases, which are available in India.

1. National Informatics Centre:

* Single Field Search - Title, Inventor, Applicant/Assignee, IP Classification
* Bibliography Search – To search in all fields Title, Inventor, Applicant and IP Classification with combination.

2. Patent Facilitating Centre:

* Ekaswa - A Database [Patent applications filed in India as published in the issues of the Gazette of India (Part III, Section 2) from January 1995 onwards.]
* Ekaswa - B Database [Patent applications notified for opposition in the Gazette of lndia (Part III, Section 2) published from January 1995 onwards.]
* Ekaswa - C Database [Patent applications published in official Journal of Patent office published from Jan 2005 to June 2007

3. Indian Patent Office:

* 18 Month Publication Search – To search the patent application by using the drop menu such as Title, Inventor, Applicant, IP Classification etc.
* Issued Patent Search - You can perform patent search for Patent number from 1 to 1,69,500 and also new records with full text in PDF format.

4. India BigPatents:

To do a search, enter in any text in the box provided and click on 'Search'. The system will perform a full-text search over all the fields across the entire database of all applications and patents.
* Applicant Search: Here you can find all the applicant filed patent applications in India, and also all patent applications filed by each applicant.
* Issues Patent Search: All granted patent will be listed, but you will not get more details.
* Publication datewise search: Here you can find all the patent applications published as per journal date.

5. CiPIS Clairvolex:

* Quick Search: To search keywords and patent number.
* Advanced Search: To search in Title, Abstract, Applicant Name, Applicant Country, Inventor Name, Date [filing, publication, priority etc.,] and classification with boolean operator OR, AND. This is search database gives best search result and information, however the available database is only from 1st Jan 2006 – 1st Feb 2007.

Happy patent searching!

This is a very nice synopsis of patent searching in India.
But I have had little success with any of these websites to find applications by searching with application number eg 4063/DELNP/2005

Is there a preferred format?

Also is there any way to see full text , especially claims for patent applications

Finally is the Indian Patent Office site working or require special security clearance/ firewall settings?

Any information you can provide will be extremely useful !!!!!

Very informative.

Is there any database, which provides keyword search for patent description?

I am looking for details of a published patent. I am able to get the abstract but am not able to get the full text. The patent for which I need the full text was submitted in the Mumbai office. Any information regarding this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Senthil, this really is useful info. In case your readers are interested, I wanted to mention that my company has put together an interactive map of global patent coverage, at http://www.intellogist.com/wiki/Patent_Coverage_Map

It only includes major search sources that we have been able to evaluate, so it is not comprehensive, however it can be useful to give an overview of what major subscription tools offer coverage of a particular country.

Thanks!

Hi,

I have couple of questions:

1. Does Indian Patent Office (Ipairs) carry a date/time stamp, when they update the legal status or any other information in their portal Online? If not what would be the best way to know, what/when was the status last updated?
e.g. I may want to know XYZ current patent legal status, and if there is an update later - what date was id updated on Ipairs.

2. Also, could you please let me know the list of Indian patent database service providers (co. names) in India?

- Bonnie
